Cleaning Up Machine-Made Patterns in Your Own Drafts

Machine-drafted prose has a texture you can learn to spot. The good news is that the texture is made of writing habits — and writing habits are editable.

The patterns to look for

• Low perplexity — words that are exactly what a model would predict next.
• Low burstiness — sentences that barely vary in length and structure.
• Formulaic transitions — “Furthermore,” “Moreover,” “In conclusion.”
• Generic abstraction — no numbers, names, places or concrete examples.

Edit the patterns, not your meaning

Start by reading for rhythm. Does every sentence run the same length? Break it up. Are the transitions robotic? Cut them. Is the vocabulary suspiciously polished? Say it plainly. Then add specifics — a figure, a location, a small imperfection — because machines default to the generic.

The loop that makes it stick

1. Read — read the draft aloud and mark anything you would not say.
