Why uniform prose reads as machine prose

A detector estimates two things: how surprising each word is in context, and how much a text varies in shape. Human writing is uneven. It has a fifteen-word sentence followed by a four-word one, an aside, a sudden concrete detail. Machine writing is even, because it is generated by picking likely continuations.

That definition puts non-native writers in an awkward spot without anyone intending it. Careful academic English taught from templates is deliberately even: similar sentence lengths, standard connectors, few contractions, no jokes. It reads as competent, and to a statistical model it also reads as predictable.

The habits that raise a score

A few patterns show up again and again in flagged drafts. Every sentence lands between eighteen and twenty-five words. Paragraphs open the same way: "Firstly", "In addition", "It is important to consider". Claims are hedged into safety — "this may suggest that it could be argued" — which removes the specific, unusual phrasing that makes text hard to predict.

None of this is bad writing in the ordinary sense. It is writing optimized for not being wrong, and that is exactly the shape a detector associates with generated text.

What not to do

Do not add errors on purpose. Deliberate typos and awkward grammar do not change the rhythm a detector measures, and they make the writing worse for every human reader, including the one marking it.

Do not flatten your vocabulary either, and do not translate idioms word for word from your first language to sound less formulaic — that usually produces a sentence that is surprising for the wrong reason. And do not accept a rewrite that changes what you meant just because the score improved. A number is not worth a distorted argument.
